Captain Mike and 1st Mate Val have been married 9 years. Each has successfully completed several American Sailing Association courses of instruction. These include Basic and Advanced Keelboat Sailing, Basic & Intermediate Coastal Cruising, Catamaran Cruising, and Coastal Navigation. They have also bareboat chartered extensively throughout the US and British Virgin Islands over the last ten years.Prior to beginning their sailing mission around the world, they owned a number of successful Domino's Pizza restaurants. After a combined 37 years in the business, Mike and Valerie decided to sell their business to pursue sailing and sharing the gospel. They do this primarily through sharing and distributing The JESUS Film as they sail around the world. The JESUS Film is now available in over 500 languages.
Morris Johnston, a wonderful Christian friend, owns a 22 foot Gloucester, a beautiful boat named Opie which they sail from their backyard on the North end of lake Bridgeport, Texas. He has also taken several ASA courses, including Basic and Advanced Keelboat Sailing and Coastal Navigation. He teaches an adult Suday School class and is the current director of the Men's Group at their church, FIrst Baptist Church of Bridgeport. Morris owned and operated an agency for Farmer's Insurance Group for 17 years.
Canary Crew JoLene Johnston, Morris' terrific wife, is also a wonderful Christian friend. She, along with Morris, travelled with us to Mallorca, Spain a couple of years ago to test sail an Oyster 68. She also sailed with us for two weeks last month in the Canary Islands, Spain, and now sails with us from Barbados to Tobago, along with Morris, of course. JoLene was the first woman on the board for Texas Commerce Bank (now Chase), the first woman Rotary member and Chamber of Commerce Executive Board Member in Arlington. JoLene was a district manager at SW Bell, where she worked for 28 years. She is currently on the bank board for Chase Bank in Arlington. She also attends First Baptist Church Bridgeport and serves as Secretary of the Personnel Committee.
Crew Richard Peterson is an experienced sailor and Christian friend whom we first met nearly 9 years ago while sailing and then again on our honeymoon in December 1992. He has sailed around the world single-handedly! His sailboat KOA, a wonderfully equipped 43 foot Tazwell, lies in St. Croix, USVI. He is from Maryland but has been sailing KOA for the last 10 years. His stories are fascinating, his knowledge of sailing priceless, and his presence aboard Good News is very welcome by all!
Crew
Sylvia is a
very nice person that Richard has known for nearly a year. She is
a Christian lady whose mother works as a missionary to Indian
children in Northern Arizona. Originally from Connecticut, Sylvia
has sailed across the Atlantic eastbound by way of Bermuda, the
Azores, and finally Madeira, Portugal. She is a fantastic cook and
a great crew member.
Munday!
